There is no direct train and no direct flight between them, and the public options all route you back through Hanoi with a wait in between. Which Direction Works Better?
Ninh Binh → Sapa
Most travellers run this leg northbound after two or three days around Trang An and Tam Coc. Leaving Ninh Binh in the morning puts you in Sapa town in the late afternoon, with time to check in and walk before dinner. An early start also clears the Hanoi ring road before it thickens.
Sapa → Ninh Binh
Southbound works well if Sapa is your first stop after Hanoi and you are heading down towards Ninh Binh and the coast. The same fixed fare applies. Tell us your onward plan when you book — if you are continuing to a cruise or a flight the same day, we will build the timing backwards from that.
The Route: Ninh Binh to Sapa via the Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway
The drive runs north from Ninh Binh to the Hanoi ring road, then joins the Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway — the same expressway used on our Hanoi to Sapa transfers — and follows it almost the whole way to Lao Cai before the mountain road climbs to Sapa town. Google Maps puts the fastest route at 404 km and about 6 hours 15 minutes of pure driving. We plan around 7 hours door to door, which leaves room for the pickup, comfort stops and the slower mountain section at the end.
Because Sapa sits at the end of a mountain road, the last stretch is slower than the expressway section. We plan the schedule around arriving in daylight wherever the booking allows.

Private Car vs Sleeper Bus vs Train
There is no direct public route between Ninh Binh and Sapa. The sleeper-bus option means a transfer in Hanoi with a wait between legs, and the overnight train runs from Hanoi to Lao Cai, not from Ninh Binh — so you would still need to reach Hanoi first and then transfer again from Lao Cai station up to Sapa town.
The private car is not the cheapest way to make this journey. What it buys is one vehicle for the whole distance, no changes with luggage, and a departure time you choose rather than a timetable you fit around.

Rest Stops and Where to Eat on the Way
The Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway runs 265 km and has five official rest stops, spaced so you are never far from a toilet, fuel or a hot meal. Coming from Ninh Binh you join the expressway at the Noi Bai end, so all five lie ahead of you.

On a Ninh Binh start, Phuoc An at Km 22+900 lands roughly two hours in — the natural first break. Tuan Tu at Km 57+500 is the stop travellers most often single out for value among the five.
Be realistic about the cost, though: expressway rest stops in Vietnam are convenient rather than cheap. Vietnamese reporting from February 2026 put a rice plate at an expressway rest stop at around 60,000 VND (≈ $2), against 25,000–30,000 VND for an ordinary local meal off the highway. None of the five is budget eating. If the meal matters more to your group than the clock, decide before you set off whether to eat on the expressway or hold out for Sapa town.

One more worth knowing honestly: most of this route is modern expressway, but the final climb into Sapa town is mountain road with sustained bends.
