Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh are the two headline landscapes of northern Vietnam — limestone karst at sea, and the same karst rising out of rice paddies. Almost every itinerary includes both, yet the direct leg between them is the one transfer most travellers get wrong: buses run via transfer hubs with luggage reshuffles, and backtracking through Hanoi wastes half a day. A private car runs the leg direct, in either direction, timed to your cruise disembarkation or your morning in Trang An.

How Much Does a Ha Long Bay to Ninh Binh Private Car Cost?
| Route | Distance / drive time | SUV (5 seats) | SUV (7 seats) | Executive MPV |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ha Long ⇄ Ninh Binh (either direction) | ≈ 250 km · ~4 hr | 1,900,000 VND (≈ $73) | 2,000,000 VND (≈ $76) | 3,500,000 VND (≈ $134) |
The fare is per vehicle for the whole leg, identical in both directions, and fixed in writing before departure. Pickup can be any address on either side: a cruise marina or hotel in Ha Long, or a hotel, homestay or boat pier in Tam Coc, Trang An and Ninh Binh city. This route is part of our province-to-province network — no detour through Hanoi, no transfer hubs.
Which Direction Works Better?
Ha Long → Ninh Binh
The classic flow. Overnight cruises return passengers to the pier between 09:30 and 11:00; your chauffeur is waiting at disembarkation, loads the luggage once, and has you at a Tam Coc hotel by mid-afternoon — in time for a sunset row through the caves or the Mua Cave viewpoint climb.
Ninh Binh → Ha Long
Equally common in reverse: spend the morning in Trang An or Bai Dinh, leave around 08:00–08:30, and reach the cruise gateway comfortably before the typical 11:30–12:15 check-in window at Tuan Chau Marina. Tell us your cruise operator when booking and the departure time is set backwards from their cut-off, with buffer.
The Route Between the Two Karst Landscapes
The drive runs the coastal corridor via the Hai Phong expressway network, motorway for most of its length, with one comfortable rest stop around the midpoint. Four hours is the honest planning figure: expressway conditions are predictable, and the variable ends — marina traffic in Ha Long, village lanes around Tam Coc — are exactly where a local driver saves the time a bus timetable cannot.

Stops Worth Building Into the Leg
Because the car is yours, the leg can absorb a detour without renegotiation. Popular additions include Phat Diem Cathedral’s Sino-Vietnamese stone architecture south of Ninh Binh, a seafood lunch in Hai Phong, or the Do Son coast. Longer detours are quoted up front as part of your fixed figure — mention them on WhatsApp when you book.
Which Vehicle Suits This Leg?
Cruise luggage is the deciding factor. Couples travel comfortably in the SUV (5 seats) with up to four large cases and day bags. A family of four coming off a two-night cruise usually carries more than they think — the SUV (7 seats) keeps everyone and everything inside the cabin. Groups of five or six, or anyone wanting to work or sleep across the four hours, should take the Executive MPV: individual seats, deep recline and room for seven suitcases.
Luggage, Children and Cruise Logistics
The chauffeur meets you at the disembarkation exit, not the car park, and handles the bags from gangway to boot. Child seats are available on request at booking. If your cruise returns late — weather holds and slow tenders happen — the driver tracks the situation with the operator and waits; a delayed boat never forfeits your transfer. On the Ninh Binh side, drivers know the boat piers at Trang An and Tam Coc and the narrow homestay lanes where big buses cannot enter.
Seasons on This Route
The leg runs year-round. Summer (June–August) brings afternoon downpours that slow the final urban stretches — another reason for morning departures. Late May and early June add golden rice harvest around Tam Coc, and October to April is the dry, cool cruising season when both destinations are at their best and marina traffic peaks; booking the transfer a day or two ahead is enough even then.
What Your Fare Covers
The fixed price includes the car and professional chauffeur (everyday English on the road; fluent English support on WhatsApp 24/7), fuel, all expressway and BOT tolls, and parking at both ends. It does not include entrance or boat tickets at the sights. There is no deposit — you pay at the end of the ride — and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
Extend the Journey
This leg slots into larger loops: Hanoi → Ha Long → Ninh Binh → Hanoi is the most-booked circuit in our fleet, and Cat Ba island can be inserted between Ha Long and the mainland via the Tuan Chau ferry. From Ninh Binh you can also continue south or head into the mountains — see all intercity routes.
Continue your journey with the same car and driver:
- Ninh Binh to Sapa — from the karst straight to the mountains, no detour through Hanoi
- Ha Long Bay to Sapa — bay to mountains in one leg
- Ninh Binh to Cat Ba — to the Cat Hai ferry and cable-car gateway
- Cat Ba to Ha Long Bay — the short hop between the island and the cruise ports
- Noi Bai Airport to Ninh Binh and Noi Bai Airport to Ha Long Bay — start the loop straight from arrivals
- Private car with driver in Ninh Binh and in Ha Long Bay — every fare from each destination on one page

Ha Long Bay to Ninh Binh: Questions Travellers Ask
Is the price per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle, for the whole leg. Four guests in an SUV (7 seats) share one fare of 2,000,000 VND (≈ $76) — not four separate tickets.
Can the driver pick us up straight off the cruise?
Yes. Give us the cruise name and disembarkation pier; the chauffeur monitors the boats’ return window and waits at the exit with a name sign, so there is no gap between gangway and car door.
Will we make a 12:00 cruise check-in leaving Ninh Binh in the morning?
Yes, with an 08:00–08:30 departure. That builds in the four-hour drive plus buffer for marina traffic. For earlier cut-offs, we simply set pickup earlier — the time is confirmed in writing the day before.
Is a shared limousine bus not cheaper?
Per seat, yes. But buses run hub to hub on fixed departures, reshuffle luggage at transfer points, and cannot wait for a late cruise. For two or more travellers with bags, the per-vehicle fixed fare usually costs a similar total and removes every timing risk.
