Hanoi to Ninh Binh: Bus, Train, Limousine Van or Private Car? (2026)

Short version: Ninh Binh is about 95 km south of Hanoi and you can get there four ways — public bus, train, shared limousine van, or a private car with driver. The bus and train are cheapest but leave you in Ninh Binh city, 7 – 10 km from Tam Coc and Trang An, with a taxi still to pay; the limousine van is the best-value shared option; the private car is the only one that picks you up at your Hanoi hotel, waits while you visit the sites and brings you back the same evening. Here is how they compare in 2026, with honest numbers.

Third-party prices below are typical market rates checked in August 2026 and vary by operator and season. Our own fares are fixed and published on the Hanoi to Ninh Binh private car page.

First, the Geography That Changes the Answer

“Ninh Binh” on a ticket means Ninh Binh city: the railway station, the bus station and most van offices are there. The places you actually came for — Tam Coc, Trang An, Hang Mua, Hoa Lu, Bai Dinh — are spread 5 to 20 km to the west and north-west. So every public option ends with a second leg by taxi or motorbike, and a day trip by bus or train means three or four of those hops. That hidden cost, in money and time, is why the comparison is less lopsided than the headline ticket prices suggest.

Public Bus from Giap Bat

Buses run frequently from Giap Bat station on the southern edge of Hanoi and take two to three hours depending on traffic and how many stops the driver makes. It is the cheapest ticket on this page. Against that: Giap Bat is itself a taxi ride from the Old Quarter, the bus drops you at Ninh Binh bus station rather than at the sights, and the schedule is built for locals rather than day-trippers. Good if you are staying in Ninh Binh a few nights and counting every dong; poor for a day trip.

Train to Ninh Binh

A handful of trains a day run south from Hanoi Railway Station and stop at Ninh Binh after roughly two and a quarter to three hours. Seats are cheap and the ride is pleasant enough, but the morning departures are few, the station is in the city centre rather than at Tam Coc, and for a day trip the return timings rarely line up with a full afternoon at the sites. The train makes most sense if Ninh Binh is a stop on a longer rail journey south towards Hue or Da Nang.

Shared Limousine Van

Nine-seat vans with hotel pickup in the Old Quarter are the best shared option for most visitors: a couple of hundred thousand dong, about two hours on the expressway, several departures a day, and some operators run straight to Tam Coc. Expect the pickup round through the Old Quarter to add 30 – 45 minutes before you leave the city, fixed departure times, a shared luggage bay that fills up fast, and a drop at the operator’s stop rather than your hotel. For a couple with a carry-on each, staying overnight in Ninh Binh, this is hard to beat on price.

Private Car with Driver

A car and chauffeur for your party only. You leave your Hanoi hotel when you choose — early enough to be on the Trang An boats before the tour groups, if you like — go straight to the first site, and keep the car for the day: Trang An or Tam Coc, Hang Mua, Hoa Lu or Bai Dinh, lunch, and back to Hanoi by evening. Your bags stay locked in the car while you are on the water. Chauffeurs speak everyday English; our support team is on WhatsApp around the clock.

Two fares matter. A one-way transfer is 1,200,000 VND (≈ $46) for up to three guests in the SUV (5 seats), 1,300,000 VND (≈ $50) for up to four in the SUV (7 seats), 3,000,000 VND (≈ $115) for four to eight in the Executive MPV. A day trip with the driver waiting at every stop is 1,800,000 / 2,000,000 / 4,000,000 VND (≈ $153) for up to 8 hours. Fuel, expressway tolls and parking are included; entrance and boat tickets are not. No deposit — you pay at the end in cash (Vietnamese dong) or by Vietnamese bank transfer. If you are landing at the airport, the Noi Bai Airport to Ninh Binh transfer skips Hanoi altogether.

The Per-Person Maths for a Day Trip

Take a family of four doing Ninh Binh in a day. By van: four seats each way at roughly 250,000 VND (≈ $10) is 2,000,000 VND (≈ $76), plus taxis between the van stop and three sites — typically another 300,000 – 500,000 VND (≈ $19) — and a schedule dictated by the van. By private car: 2,000,000 VND (≈ $76) for the SUV (7 seats) day trip, all in, door to door, leaving when you want. For three people the SUV (5 seats) at 1,800,000 VND (≈ $69) works out at 600,000 VND (≈ $23) each, about the same as two van seats and two taxis. For one or two people staying overnight, the van is cheaper and the right call.

How Early Should You Leave Hanoi?

For a day trip, leaving the Old Quarter at 07:00 – 07:30 puts you at Trang An or Tam Coc around 09:30, ahead of the coach groups that arrive mid-morning, and leaves time for Hang Mua and Hoa Lu before the drive back. The boats run through the day, but queues are shortest early. A private car is the only option that lets you set that departure time; the first vans and trains leave later, and by the time you have crossed town to a station you have lost the advantage.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Staying several nights, travelling light, on a budget: shared limousine van with hotel pickup; bus or train if you are happy with a taxi at each end.
  • Continuing south by rail afterwards: train, with a taxi into Tam Coc.
  • A day trip from Hanoi, any group size: private car with the driver waiting — it is the only option that fits three sites into one day without watching the clock.
  • Families, groups of three to nine, or anyone with suitcases: private car, one way or day trip; the per-person cost lands near the van once you count taxis.
